A top-of-the-line mattress makes for a good night's sleep, right? So, we asked the question, does a top-of-the-line office chair make for a good day’s work? I think so. The right office chair will be supportive and comfortable, just like your mattress should be. So, I turned to the mattress makers at Tempur-Pedic and tried a Tempur-Pedic office chair.
Known for its high-quality memory foam mattresses, Tempur-Pedic has brought its signature comfort to the office with the Tempur-Lumbar Support Office Chair (available at Tempur-Pedic) . Sitting in this chair for eight hours a day during my work week provided outstanding comfort—but the experience wasn't perfect. The chair arrived slightly broken and dirty, but this is still one of the most comfortable office chairs I've ever used.
What is a Tempur-Lumbar Support Office Chair?
The Tempur-Lumbar Support office chair looks like any other: five caster wheels, a swiveling base, adjustable arms, and a mesh back seat.
Where this Tempur-Pedic office chair differs from other office chairs is in the cushioning. The cushioning in the chair is the same proprietary Tempur foam used in Tempur-Pedic mattresses. The company claims the foam evenly distributes your weight for a more supportive seat.
The foam cushion is a textured polyester fabric available in six different colors, and elastic mesh covers the back of the chair for spring-like support.
On the backside of the chair is a lumbar cushion made of Tempur material and a lumbar stabilizer that helps alleviate back strain.
The chair features a series of adjustments, like the ability to move the armrests vertically and horizontally. The seat height has an adjustable range of 19 inches to 23 inches.
The chair back reclines up to seven degrees, and if you enjoy a permanent reclined position, you can lock it at your preferred angle.
What we like
There’s no end-of-day back pain in this chair
Sometimes, extra support is needed during extended work days. You'll find this desk chair can contour to your body to provide you extra comfort.
The Tempur-Pedic office chair offers one of the most comfortable seats for all-day sitting. Since the seat cushion crafted from Tempur material, you get the support of a great mattress—but in an office chair form.
The seat feels firm to the touch but offers enough support for cradling my backside when I sink my weight into it. The pressure points in my coccyx feel balanced, leaving me without sore spots after a long day.
When it comes to office chairs, I'm looking for one that doesn't cause my back to ache at the end of the day. The Tempur-Lumbar Support office chair passed this test, soothing the pressure points throughout my back.
My bank presses into the lumbar pillow and feels caressed by the support, which also helps me sit up straight.
You can adjust just about everything to your liking
The seat height can be adjusted and ranges from 19 inches to 23 inches.
An office chair should offer personalized comfort with adjustable features that fit people of all shapes and sizes—and you can find it in this Tempur-Pedic office chair. Beyond being height adjustable, you can choose the reclining angle and the height and width of the armrest.
Not all bodies are the same, so the customizations are great features and allow you to find the best ergonomic position.
What we don’t like
The assembly is difficult
I’ve assembled many office chairs, and the Tempur-Lumbar office chair made me sweat. This chair is cumbersome, plus the instructions are difficult to follow.
When taking the pieces out of the box, each item's heft left a lasting first impression on both me and my arms. Each piece, especially the seat, is bulky, which makes moving the chair pieces around a workout.
The instruction manual includes a series of illustrations with very little text, making it hard to understand how the pieces go together.
But, in comparison to other chairs we’ve tested, the assembly is an arduous task.
However, the weight of the chair makes it feel higher quality. The metal components are thick, giving me confidence the material shouldn't bend or dent easily.
It arrives in poor packaging
The box containing the Tempur-Pedic office chair contains little to no bubble wrap or protective cardboard. There are thin strips of cardboard separating the pieces, but there is spare room for the parts to move around and damage each other.
The stand of the chair came coated in a layer of dust from the cardboard surrounding it. A piece of black plastic that covers the hardware on the backside of the chair arrived slightly broken.
I spoke with customer service, who offered replacement for the chair. However, because the piece was still usable, I declined the replacement.
I appreciate the decreased amount of packing materials from a sustainability perspective, but the lack of packing materials resulted in dirty and broken pieces arriving at my doorstep.
The armrests constantly move around
A small (but pesky) aspect on this chair is that the armrests wobble.
While I appreciate all of the adjustable features the Tempur-Pedic office chair offers, the armrests move too easily for my liking.
With the press of a button, the arms of the chair can move up and down vertically and will lock into place. But armrest pads move horizontally and do not lock into place. I found that if I moved in the slightest, so would the armrest pad, which meant I had to readjust to my preferred position frequently.
Should you buy the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Lumbar Support Office Chair?
Yes, it offers good value
Switching in the Tempur-Pedic office chair would be a great investment—for your back and your workday.
The Tempur-Lumbar chair is a good addition to any office. The Tempur material provides a firm, thick seat that evenly distributes weight and takes the pressure off my lower back. With a variety of adjustments available, this chair serves up maximum comfort.
Disappointingly, it didn’t arrive in the best packaging, which led to damaged parts. The instructions are unclear, and the large pieces are awkward to assemble. Despite these disappointing aspects, the Tempur-Pedic office chair is still worth it.
With an MSRP just under $350, the Tempur-Pedic office chair is less expensive than our best value office chair, the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro. While it may not have as extensive features as the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro, the Tempur-Lumbar office chair is suitable for those who prioritize a chair that will help prevent and keep back pain at bay.
PROS: Good for back pain, adjustable, plush seat cushioning. CONS: Hard to put together, packaged poorly, the armrests don’t lock.
