Taking a look at your streaming costs can often force you to reckon with just how much you're spending across services. Sling TV's free service, Freestream, offers a great way to watch your favorite shows without having to spend a dime.
Much like services like Amazon's Freevee, Sling Freestream is a free streaming service that allows viewers to catch ad-supported libraries of films and series. It differs slightly from Sling TV, though, so we'll walk you through the differences and how each version measures up to the other.
What is Sling Freestream?
Sling Freestream is a free streaming service from Sling TV that allows viewers to catch ad-supported libraries of films and series. You can access streaming content from over 335 live channels, as well as 41,000 on-demand titles.
As with many other streaming services, you can use Freestream to create watchlists, watch your favorite channels, set parental controls, and generally customize your experience to your preferences.
What can you watch on Freestream?
Freestream is home to over 335 live channels, including ABC News Live, CBS News, Bloomberg, Barstool Sports, Overtime, and more. You can also access up to 41,000 on-demand movies and series, from "The Walking Dead" to "Key & Peele." If you're curious about the depths of the catalog on offer, you can check out the Sling Freestream guide on its website.
Where can you watch Sling Freestream?
You can start watching Freestream on Apple TV, iOS devices, Roku devices, Fire TV devices, Chromecasts, Xbox, AirTV player, Android devices, Windows devices, LG TVs, Chromebooks, Samsung TVs, Vizio TVs, and more. Check the supported devices list if you want to ensure that you'll be able to watch.
If you register for a Sling account, you can subscribe to additional content for $2 to $10 each month, such as Showtime for $10 a month, Starz for $9 a month, AMC+ for $7.99 a month, and so on. To register, you'll provide an email address and a password.
Sling TV vs. Sling Freestream
Sling TV is similar to Freestream in a few ways. Both are streaming services that utilize a mix of live-streaming and on-demand titles in their catalogs, but Sling TV has more well-known channels than Freestream, including popular primetime channels like ABC, AMC, CNN, Comedy Central, ESPN, FOX, Freeform, History Channel, NBC, National Geographic, TLC, and more.
Essentially, if you're looking for a replacement for cable, Sling TV is a great option; Freestream, with its somewhat abbreviated, less popular catalog of channels, isn't designed to function as a cable replacement.
Can you get Sling TV for free?
Sling TV and Freestream both offer live channels, but Sling TV's lowest tier subscription, the Orange tier, starts at $40 a month, with the option to pay $30 for your first month. If you want to upgrade to more channels, you can pay for the Blue tier (starting at $40 a month) or the Orange & Blue tier to access all Sling TV has to offer starting at $55 a month. You can also access other streaming catalogs with your subscription as additional costs, like Showtime and AMC+. You'll also get 50 free hours of DVR storage, meaning that you can record and save films and series for later.
While you can't get Sling TV for free, if you want to test the waters of a Sling streaming service, or simply get access to live news channels without paying for a cable subscription, Sling Freestream could be a good fit, and won't cost you anything.
