Even if you don’t own the Always Pan, you’ve probably seen it in an influencer’s kitchen or a celebrity’s cooking show. Not only are these pans gorgeous enough to claim full-time residency on stovetops, but they’re also super versatile.
Our Place, the brand behind this popular pan, has entered the cutlery chat with a new set of knives and a walnut wood cutting board. We tried these new products to see if they could live up to the hype of the brand’s inaugural kitchen tool.
About Our Place
Our Place is a lifestyle cookware and dinnerware brand founded by Shiza Shahid, whose career has spanned from corporate consulting to the Malala Fund. After the successful launch of the Always Pan that went viral, Our Place announced the addition of a walnut wood cutting board and a three-piece knife set to its offerings.
About Our Place’s Fully Prepped Bundle
The set includes a paring knife, a serrated slice knife, and a chef's knife.
The bundle ($230) includes a walnut wood cutting board ($95), a paring knife ($40), a chef’s knife ($70), and a serrated slicing knife ($60). You can save money by buying the whole bundle or the knife trio ($145), but you can also purchase items individually.
The knives are available in four colors, Steam (beige-ish grey), Blue Salt (essentially slate blue), Spice (pink with orange undertone), and Char (grey with green undertone). When buying the knife trio, you can choose the color of your choice for each knife.
What I like about the Our Place bundle
The juice trend helps prevent spilling.
I used this set of knives and the cutting board every day for two weeks. Since I’ve been testing other kitchen products at home, these knives and the cutting board have become my testing buddies, assisting with chopping produce, slicing bread, and cutting meat.
The cutting board is sturdy and gorgeous
When it comes to cutting boards, a thick piece of wood is my preferred choice of material, as it’s durable, gorgeous, and almost indestructible. Some may argue that wooden boards are a pain to maintain, but I don’t mind taking care of mine. This walnut wood cutting board has already earned my admiration for its appearance and heavy-duty construction.
I instantly liked this one because of the juice trench, which easily held one-and-a-half cups of liquid during testing, beating the record in our cutting board testing (half cup). The surface is slightly sloped, which encourages liquid to end up in the trench. To dispose of the liquid, simply lightly tilt the board.
The board has a rough finish, which increases friction that helps stabilize it while in use. It didn’t move a smidge, which put my own thick acacia cutting board to shame.
The knives are easy to use for long periods of time
I like the chef's knife and paring knife the most.
I cook a lot, which means it’s important to find a comfortable knife to help me dice ingredients. All knives are full-tang with a patented pinch grip, which makes holding the knife for an extended period of time less tiring.
All three of the knives are made of premium stainless steel and are rust-resistant. At the same time, they’re super lightweight compared to other kitchen knives that I’ve tested. I was slicing a handful of potatoes to prepare for multiple deep-frying tests and my arm didn’t feel anything afterwards.
In terms of performance, I was surprised by how effortless it was to thinly slice beef and pork using the chef’s knife. Since I only used the knives for a few weeks, I’m not sure exactly how long the blades will remain sharp. That said, their heavy-duty construction makes me feel pretty confident they'd be sharp for a while.
When slicing a loaf of bread using the serrated knife, I noticed the bread's edges were relatively ragged, but otherwise it worked fine. The paring knife was sharp and precise, a great tool for cutting fruits and filleting whole fish.
What I don’t like about the Our Place bundle
The wooden cutting board is a bit rough, which is due to the fact it’s not finely sanded or finished with varnish. This shouldn’t affect your day-to-day operations as far as a cutting board is concerned. However, if you’re trying to chop up a pack of meat into small pieces or to mince herbs, you may have a difficult time cleaning up the board, as small bits and pieces can get stuck.
Another option is to sand the board yourself and layer it with mineral oil. Overtime, the board will become smoother.
Should you buy the Our Place bundle?
Buying the whole set takes the stress out of shopping.
If you’re in the process of moving into a new place or you want to redecorate your kitchen, buying the whole set takes the stress out of shopping and is the most economical way to go when it comes to Our Place.
For those of you who are shopping for a new cutting board, I highly recommend this wooden board if you don’t mind some maintenance every week or two. Wooden boards are self-healing, which means any damages should disappear over time with proper care.
If you’re adding new knives to your kitchen or swapping out old ones, the beautifully-designed Our Place knives are worth the investment, especially if you’re into an aesthetics inclined kitchen design and you’re already a fan of the Always Pan.
