This minimalist spatula is my new favorite kitchen tool
I tested the Material Soft-Edge Turner and here’s what happened.

I’m a bit of a purist when it comes to kitchen gadgets; I like my pans sturdy, my graters boxy, and my knives unfussy. Even though I test lots of fun equipment for work, the fanciest kitchen appliance I use regularly is my immersion blender. However, I also can’t resist a beautifully colorful product of any kind, so when Material released its Soft-Edge Turner (available in a perfectly pinky color they call Terra Rosa), I had to try it for myself. Could this beauty become my new favorite aesthetically pleasing kitchen tool?
What is Material?
Chances are, you’ve seen Material ads pop up in your Instagram or Facebook feed at some point, so you might be familiar with their beautifully styled photography and minimalist approach to kitchen essentials. Co-founded by Eunice Byun and Dave Nguyen, Material is described by its founders as a “new category of kitchenware, designed and curated for modern home cooks like us.”
Byun and Nguyen design all their pots and pans, cutlery, cutting boards, and more with home cooks in mind, rather than chefs cooking in Michelin-starred restaurants.
What does the Soft Edge Turner feel like?
I fell in love with this spatula the moment I picked it up—its handle is perfectly weighted so it’s bottom-heavy, making it incredibly ergonomic. It’s made with BPA-free silicone, which means it’s velvety smooth, dishwasher-safe, and super easy to clean. Available in three colors (Blue Grey, Terra Rosa, and Oyster), the Soft-Edge Turner is designed to be held with ease. Plus, it’ll match almost every kitchen.
How does it perform?

The Soft-Edge Turner handles like a dream. The edges really are soft, which means this spatula is compatible with all pots and pans regardless of shape or material. I’ve now used it to cook everything from scrambled eggs to quesadillas, and when I used this spatula to prepare an especially tomato-y recipe, I was so excited to see that the surface didn’t stain.
My only qualm with the Soft-Edge Turner is its size; I wish it was just slightly larger! This spatula can flip a fried egg, but can’t handle two at a time (though it’s just as easy to flip one egg and then flip the other). A bigger spatula would’ve come in handy for that quesadilla, too. That said, I had no issues with size when it came to cooking all other dishes I prepared.
Is the Soft Edge Turner worth it?
If you’re looking to upgrade your existing spatula, or you don’t even own one at the moment, the Soft-Edge Turner could be right for you. I’m in love with mine and I’m already planning to gift it to everyone I know, because at $15, this really is a great price point for a high-quality kitchen tool.
