The GE GDE25EYKFS has a clean appearance with no external features besides its robust handles.
Opening up the fridge compartment reveals two rows of shelves above twin crispers, and four bins on the door—two half-width and two full-width.
The freezer drawer slides open to reveal a large storage bin with a pull-out shelf stationed above. The left portion of this shelf is where the ice dispenser and reservoir sit.
What we like
Its temperatures are spot-on and remarkably steady
The GE GDE25EYKFS's temperatures stay remarkably close to 37°F, the ideal fridge temperature.
Bottom-freezer refrigerators aren't necessarily known for their top-tier cooling performance, so we were relatively surprised when we saw the GE GDE25EYKFS refrigerator's test results.
For context, a fridge needs to keep temperatures between 32°F and 40°F. Any colder and items will begin to freeze, and warmer temperatures won't properly refrigerate your food. This is a relatively narrow band of temperatures, but it still provides 8°F of wiggle room. Most fridges waver by a few degrees, either over time, or between different areas of the fridge.
The average temperature for this GE model was a nearly-ideal 36.7°F, and that temperature did not move by even 1°F. All temperature changes, from top to bottom or over time, were less than 1°F.
To be clear: This is one of the most consistent fridges we've ever tested.
Typically, fridges with this level of temperature control often feature new compressor technology and cost nearly twice what the GDE25EYKFS does.
This performance is likely due in part to two of this fridge's features. It has a multiflow air system with electronic sensors that helps keep temperatures consistent throughout the entire fridge, eliminating warm spots.
Its Turbo Cool setting blasts out cold air to help correct the temperature whenever you've had the door open for too long. Both of these features working in tandem result in some of the steadiest temperatures we've recorded.
This is simply amazing performance for this fridge's current purchase price.
The performance doesn't fall off in the freezer either, with temperatures again barely budging from an average temperature of -1.5°F. This is especially important as fluctuations in the freezer's temperature are what lead to freezer burn, which can dramatically reduce the lifespan of frozen foods.
It features a lot of usable storage space for a bottom-freezer
The GDE25EYKFS refrigerator features a lot more fridge and freezer storage space compared to other bottom-freezer fridges.
Another area where bottom-freezers don't typically excel is total usable storage area. This style of refrigerator usually averages just under 10 cubic feet in its fridge compartment, which falls short of other styles by about one cubic foot. This type of freezer mount also tends to be smaller, averaging 3.6 cubic feet, which is also about one cubic foot smaller than competing types of refrigerators.
The GE GDE25EYKFS manages to close both of these gaps by offering a ton of usable storage space. Its fridge has 11.92 cubic feet of space, and its freezer has 4.15 cubic feet. This amount of storage space puts the GDE25EYKFS on par with a French-door refrigerator, which typically offers the most usable storage space.
If maximizing your fridge's storage capacity is important to you, the GE GDE25EYKFS is one of the best bottom-freezers for you.
It has helpful extra features
While the feature set for this GE fridge is a bit bare-bones compared to a French-door model, we do like what is on offer.
To further enhance its spacious design, there's a sliding snack drawer affixed to the underside of one of the repositionable shelves that can be positioned anywhere along that shelf. We reward fixtures like this that help take advantage of some of the otherwise empty space directly underneath the shelf, because not everything is going to be tall.
This sliding drawer is helpful for making room for taller items, or you can place it in the middle to serve as a barrier between two halves of the fridge if you're splitting the space with someone.
We also love its internal lighting—the GE GDE25EYKFS features LED lighting, which allows for more consistent illumination and doesn't get hot like the traditional single-bulb fridge lights.
Also, while this fridge doesn't have traditional smart features, it does have a door alarm that goes off after it's been open too long. As someone who's had the horrifying realization that an ajar door has spoiled an entire fridge's worth of food, this is an incredibly welcome safety feature.
What we don’t like
Its crisper drawers are just OK
This refrigerator doesn't really have many areas where we think it needs a ton of improvement, so instead we'll focus on one area where it's slightly below average: Its crispers.
These are the sort of crispers you'd expect to find in a budget buy: They're just plastic drawers with a small sliding gate serving as humidity controls. Even on their most restrictive setting, however, these crispers still let humidity escape at about twice the rate of a good performer.
What this means is that your fresh veggies and leafy greens will wilt a bit faster in the GDE25EYKFS than they would in a fridge with better crispers.
This is nowhere near a disqualifier, of course, but when you're an overachiever like the GDE25EYKFS, the middling scores are what stand out.
What owners are saying
Users seem to be happy with the GDE25EYKFS, awarding it 4.4 stars out of 5 on average across major retailers.
The rave reviews focus on its overall design, bright interior lighting, cold temperatures, and ample available storage space.
Those who are unhappy with their purchase all seem to have received lemons, with the ice maker being a common failure point. This isn't unique to the GE GDE25EYKFS: A broken ice maker is one of the most common complaints we see on fridges with the feature.
Warranty
GE offers the industry standard 1-year warranty for parts and labor. Because this isn't a Profile or Café model, it doesn't carry their 5-year extended warranty for parts of the refrigeration system.
Should you buy the GE GDE25EYKFS bottom-freezer refrigerator?
Yes—This is one of the best bottom-freezer refrigerators you can buy
The GE GDE25EYKFS is a relatively straightforward fridge. If you want great performance and don't care about extra features or a water dispenser, it's one of the best bottom-freezer fridges we’ve tested. It has the temperature control of a much more expensive fridge, it offers significantly more storage space than other fridges with this form factor, and it's priced to be an excellent value.
During the course of our review process, the price of this fridge dropped by about $500. If you're able to find this fridge in the $1300 price range, it is simply one of the best-value bottom-freezer fridges you’ll find. Even if it's not on sale, its impressive performance will still be the same, and it's still worth the purchase.
Overall, we recommend the GDE25EYKFS fridge to anyone looking for a new bottom-freezer refrigerator. If you're looking for a slightly more advanced option with better crispers, we recommend checking out the Whirlpool WRB322DMBM.
Although it lacks extra features, including a water dispenser, the GE GDE25EYKFS Bottom-freezer Refrigerator makes up for it in extra storage space and consistently cool temperatures.
