Spooky season is in full swing, which means you’re probably shopping for some Halloween costumes. If you’re looking to outfit your kids in some classic Disney Halloween gear, we’ve got great news: the Reviewed staff and their kids tested some of shopDisney’s most popular costumes and accessories to see just how superbly sinister they are in real life.
Here are our honest, unvarnished opinions.
1. The Mandalorian
- Available sizes: 3 to 13
If your child is a fan of The Mandalorian, they're definitely going to want to dress up as the titular character. We had two different kids test out The Mandalorian costume, and both boys rated this costume as supremely comfortable. Our 7-year-old tester even wore it out to dinner, and then actually slept in it (minus the mask).
As far as sizing goes, it definitely runs slightly large—the legs of one tester's costume were long and had to be rolled up—but it was easy to get into and out of and it looked great in person.
The main complaint from both of our testers on the Mandalorian costume is that the mask is way too big—it easily fits a large adult head—so it kept slipping down and wasn't easy to see out of.
2. Boba Fett
shopDisney's Boba Fett costume is comfortable, colorful, and perfect for any galaxy.
- Available sizes: 3 to 13
For a Disney character costume that’s less well-known than the Mandalorian but still part of the Star Wars costume collection, Boba Fett is a great choice. Our 9-year-old tester loved the easy-to-put-on one-piece jumpsuit, and the coordinating mask is awesome and fit well. The cape is affixed with velcro, so kids can easily detach it, though honestly that seemed an unnecessary feature.
Our tester’s only complaint was that the costume itself is hot, but that could turn into a plus rather than a minus depending on how cold it is where you live when it’s time for trick-or-treating.
If your kiddo wants to add an accessory (or two) to their Boba Fett costume, you can add a Boba Fett jet pack or a pair of Boba Fett gauntlets that enable them to shoot discs from their wrists.
3. Darth Vader
The Darth Vader mask changes a child's voice to mimic the spooky sound of the Dark Lord.
- Available sizes: 3 to 13
Another entry from the Star Wars costume collection for kids, the Darth Vader voice-changing mask has been one of the hits of the season. In fact, this mask is the ultimate must-have if your kid wants to sport a detailed Darth Vader costume this Halloween.
Our tween tester gave the full costume an enthusiastic thumbs up, and our younger testers loved the adjustable mask, which works to change your child’s voice into that of the famous spooky-voiced Vader. Even if they’re saying “I love you” it sounds sinister.
Our testers and their friends had the best time donning the mask, jumping out of dark closets, and saying creepy things and thoroughly freaking each other out.
It also has more than 15 pre-programmed Darth Vader sound effects that your kid can access at the touch of a button when their creativity runs low. Plus, it comes with the required batteries, so parents don’t have to worry about scrambling to find three triple-A batteries right before heading out trick-or-treating.
One thing to note, however, is that the mask is heavy and somewhat difficult to adjust, so be sure and plan ahead so that you have plenty of time to find the most comfortable fit before heading out to any Halloween festivities.
4. Merida
The light-up Merida wand is a fun accessory to complete the look.
- Available sizes: 3 to 13
For kids who like princesses but who aren’t too princessy (read: prim and proper) themselves, Merida is the perfect choice. The protagonist from Brave rides horses wildly, shoots bows and arrows, and basically does everything traditionally reserved for men—except she does it while wearing a fancy satin dress.
Your little princess will likely be crowned “best dressed” when they’re sporting the Merida costume, thanks to its full skirt, gorgeous deep teal color, and all the gold accents.
Our 8-year-old tester loved the way this costume looked in the box, but once she put it on she found it slightly uncomfortable. A quick bribe of Halloween candy had her happily sporting the Merida dress for over an hour. So, it’s clearly comfortable enough to make it through a decent trick-or-treat session.
Of course, if you bravely buy the Merida costume, you've got to spring for Merida’s wand, too.
While our tester was disappointed that there wasn’t an option for a bow and arrow accessory, she was slightly mollified by the addition of this light-up wand. Topped with a gold crown and a heart-shaped “jewel,” the wand lights up with a simple push of a button. It’s worth ponying up for the wand simply because it’s so much easier to keep track of your kid when they’re carrying something that lights up while they’re trick-or-treating.
It has two settings: flashing, or solid, and it comes with batteries already installed.
5. Tinker Bell
A classic Disney combo is always a great costume choice.
- Available sizes: 3 to 9/10
Why not opt for an old school Disney movie classic and go with a Tinker Bell costume?
The Tinker Bell costume is absolutely adorable and it looks incredible in real life. It's a great option for a kid who wants to dress up in a sparkly, fluffy costume, but doesn't necessarily want to dress up as a princess.
Our tester loved how pretty this Disney Halloween costume looked when she took it out of the box; the dress features a chiffon skirt and glittery bodice. She did have an issue with it being uncomfortable—she said that the waistline seam was really itchy—so we ended up having to put a cotton tank top underneath it in order to get her to wear it.
It's worth noting that to get the complete look as shown online, you have to purchase quite a few accessories. The light-up wings (which are awesome) are an additional $15, and the coordinating sparkly shoes add another $14 to your tab, putting your total cost for this costume at around $64. If you think your kid will wear it for dress-up once Halloween is over, I think it's a good investment, but for a one time wear it's a big outlay of cash.
That being said, the light-up feature on the wings is great for keeping an eye on your trick-or-treater in the dark, and the whole costume together really looks great.
6. Spider-Man
The Spider-Man Web Shooters look awesome and are tons of fun to play with.
- Available sizes: 3 to 13
If your kid wants to be Spider-Man—and let's be real, who wouldn't want to—they've got options. shopDisney features two different Spider-Man Halloween costumes, a la Miles Morales Spider-Man and the classic Marvel Comics styling Spider-Man.
While we did not test these two Spider-Man costumes, what we did test is even cooler and is the perfect accessory for either: Spider-Man Web Shooters
Anything that enables a kid to shoot stuff from their wrists is pretty freaking cool, so naturally these Spider-Man Web Shooters were a huge hit. Honestly, even the adults loved testing this costume accessory.
They’re incredibly easy to use—just load the stretchy silicone “webs,” push the lever on your wrist, and watch the pieces shoot up to about 10 feet. These provided lots of fun for our whole family (as well as the neighborhood kids) and we got a kick out of shooting webs at each other at inopportune moments.
The only drawback is that it’s not really possible to shoot from both wrists at the same time, but they’re still effective and would make the perfect accessory to take a Spider-Man costume from meh to marvelous.
