    Pros

    • Quiet

    • Easy to use

    • Filters water

    Cons

    • Requires regular maintenance

My cats are bougie. They have refined taste, and when it comes to water, they can't be bothered to drink still water like the rest of us plebes—they require fresh, running water for their delicate pallets. After my husband and I noticed our cats jumping up and attempting to drink from our faucets, we realized it was time to change the way we gave them water—enter the Catit water fountain.

The Catit flower fountain pumps water all day long, allowing cats to drink fresh water at their leisure. It features a happy little flower that lets water run from its petals and comes in three shades: green, blue, and stainless steel. I've owned this cat fountain for three years now and loved every moment of it—here's why.

What I love about the Catit water fountain

Cats love drinking from the Catit water fountain.

My cats are obsessed with it (and better hydrated than ever).

Once my cats tried out the Catit water fountain, it was game over for the water dish we had used before. One of my cats, Shadow, regularly got hair mats—my vet recommended getting her to drink more water to see if that helped. Once we swapped to the Catit, her mats decreased significantly since she drank from the fountain way more often than still bowls. They both still love drinking from the faucets, but at least it's not as often as before.

It's quiet.

The Catit water fountain is powered by electricity, so you have to plug it into the wall and let the device do its thing. Initially, I worried it'd be too loud for comfort, but it's actually silent. If the whole house is quiet, you can hear the motor buzzing, but mostly you can just hear the water flowing, which is pretty calming.

It filters their water for them.

I don't drink unfiltered water, so why would I expect my cats to? The Catit water fountain comes with a replaceable filter we swap every few months that keeps their water supply free from anything icky that may be coming out of our faucets.

It's easy to use.

This fountain requires a bit of assembly, but it's straightforward to use once you plug it in. When the water level gets low, you pour more water directly on top of it and it's all set.

The Catit water fountain requires regular maintenance.

You need to clean it often.

Any pet product made from plastic will require regular cleaning, and the Catit fountain is no exception. Over time, gunk can build up on top of the fountain—around the white and yellow flower—and under the lid. We give ours a good scrub about once a month, and since it's plastic, it's pretty easy to clean.

You need to replace the filters often.

There's no getting around this one—you must replace the filters about once a month to ensure your cat's drinking water is as clean as possible. It's easy to find water filters on Amazon, but they're almost as expensive as the fountain itself. You can get a five-pack of filters for about $18, but they last you five months.

How to set up the Catit flower fountain

The Catit water fountain comes disassembled in its box. It features a black motor box with a cord, a white basin, a green lid, a filter, a secondary green filter cover, and a white and yellow flower.

To assemble the Catit, start with the white base. Place the black motor box at the bottom of the basin, where the white rectangular grooves sit. Bring the cord out of the bowl and let it sit in the groove on the side. Don't plug it in until you're ready to turn it on!

You can now fill the fountain with water, then place it where you'd like it to live. Place the larger green ring on the base first, then place the filter and the green filter cover. The flower comes in two parts—set the white part in the middle first, then add the yellow part. Plug the fountain in and watch your cats fall in love.

How to clean the Catit water pump

Cleaning the Catit water fountain isn't difficult, but you have to disassemble the entire thing to clean each part. Unplug the device, then remove the flower and the green components. Take out the motor and dump the water.

Wipe out each part of the fountain with warm water and a paper towel. Scrub the base and each of the colorful components. We also wipe the motor block, as gunk can build up under the rubber stoppers. Once you're done, re-assemble the fountain and place it back in its home.
