It may be an unpopular opinion, but I’m just not a summer person. The ultra-hot weather just isn’t for me, and I often struggle to get comfortable in bed on hot, humid nights. However, after many years of testing bedding, I’ve found that the right sheets make a big difference in the summertime.
Percale sheets are the obvious choice for hot weather, as they’re known for their light weight and crisp feel, but they can sometimes be rough and prickly. After testing dozens of the best percale sheets, I’ve found that the Boll & Branch Percale Sheet Set (available at Boll & Branch) is one of the most comfortable and luxurious options for the summer—in fact, these Boll & Branch sheets are so delightful that I’d happily use them year-round. Here’s what I love about them.
About the Boll & Branch Percale Sheet Set
The Boll & Branch Percale Hemmed Sheet Set is crafted from 100% organic cotton, and it’s available in all standard sizes, including twin XL, California king, and split king. The brand currently offers these sheets in six plain colors, including shades of white, gray, and blue, and the fabric is described online as “smooth and structured like a crisp button down shirt.”
Each set of these cotton percale sheets comes with four standard pieces—a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases (twin sizes only include one pillowcase). The fitted sheet has a 17-inch pocket to fit most mattresses, and the brand offers a 30-day trial on the sheets with free returns.
What we like
The percale fabric is crisp—but still soft
Percale sheets are arguably the hardest type of bedding to get just right. The fabric needs to be lightweight, crisp, and breathable, but this often translates into material that’s rough and unwelcoming to the touch.
Boll & Branch manages to strike the perfect balance of performance and comfort with its percale sheets. The cotton fabric feels like a high-quality dress shirt, with a slightly crisp hand, and it’s nicely breathable on hot summer nights.
Amazingly, the percale is also soft to the touch. It doesn’t scratch your skin when you rest your head on the pillow (a big pet peeve of mine), and I wanted to keep the sheets on my bed for several nights, even after I was done testing them.
The sheets are organic and eco-friendly
Boll & Branch stands out from many other sheet brands thanks to its focus on eco-friendly and sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. The percale sheets are made from organic cotton that’s certified by GOTS, or the Global Organic Textile Standard, and they’re also STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX certified, which means that every component of the bedding has been tested for harmful substances and is harmless for human health.
That’s not all, either. The Boll & Branch sheets are made in a Fair Trade-certified facility—in fact, the company is the first 100% organic Fair Trade Certified bedding company in the world—and there are absolutely no toxins used in any step of the manufacturing process. So not only are the sheets wildly comfortable, but they’re also perfectly safe for your home and beneficial to the planet.
They’re perfect for summertime or year-round use
If you ask me, the Boll & Branch percale sheets are the best bed linens for summertime. Because they’re so light and breathable, you don’t get overly hot or sweaty while sleeping in them, and the crisp feel is refreshing on hot nights.
While these sheets are a must-have for the summer, I can see them being just as comfy for year-round use. On a few unbearably warm days, we turned on a window air conditioner in our bedroom, and the percale sheets were still perfectly comfortable to use in the cooler conditions. I just tossed a blanket over them and cozied up in the soft sheets.
What we don’t like
The stitching could be better
Boll & Branch is firmly a luxury bedding brand. A queen-size set of percale sheets costs $279, so they’re definitely a more high-end option for your bedroom. Given the price point, I was a bit surprised to find the stitching on their sheets is very basic.
The inner corners of the fitted sheet just have plain serged hems, and while they’re neatly done with no stray threads, I feel like the brand could have gone the extra mile to add reinforcement or a closed seam for a more polished look.
The stitching on the top sheet and pillowcases is equally basic. The hems are just a plain straight stitch, and while they’re perfectly functional, I do think a decorative edge would elevate these sheets even more.
They’re slightly see-through
While perhaps not surprising given the lightweight feel of these sheets, the fabric does end up being a bit see-through. My mattress has a blue stripe across one corner, and it was visible through the fitted sheet.
This might bother you if your mattress has a pattern on it, but it could likely be minimized if you use a mattress pad or opt for one of the darker sheet colors, such as gray or blue.
Should you buy the Boll & Branch Percale Sheet Set?
We love Boll & Branch 100% organic cotton fabric.
Yes, they’re worth the splurge.
If you’re looking for delightfully soft and lightweight sheets to use during the summer, the Boll & Branch Percale Sheet Set is a worthwhile option to consider. Yes, these sheets are pricey, but they’re the right balance of crisp and soft that makes them ideal for the summertime.
The breathable construction is ideal for hot nights, helping to keep you cool as you snooze, and I think most people will find them to be equally comfortable for year-round use. (After all, you’re going to want to get your money’s worth from these high-end sheets.)
On top of their comfortable feel, these sheets are also made with safe and sustainable materials. They’re crafted from 100% certified organic cotton and free from any potentially harmful toxins, and speaking from experience, bedding from Boll & Branch is well-made and will last for many years. Overall, they’re a worthwhile investment to make your bedroom feel luxurious and comfortable.
