Ah, pet strollers. They conjure up images of pampered Pekingese, hair-bow-adorned Shih Tzus, shrieky Chihuahuas, and the occasional entitled cat. But, in practice, they’re useful for a lot more than just making a fashion statement. Pet strollers can sometimes be more convenient than an unwieldy cat carrier.

A pet stroller can help transport pets with mobility issues, or low-energy animals, over long distances. And they’re great for taking your beloved companion on indoor trips to the grocery store or mall. It also helps if the stroller includes a few amenities for humans, like storage for excess bottles and bags.

But your purchase should be based on what you intend to use it for—whether that means casual strolls around the neighborhood, tandem-bike rides, or extended hikes in the woods. To help you pick the right dog or cat stroller, we’ve rounded up some of the best pet strollers on the market.

Editor's Note:
The recommendations in this guide are based on thorough product and market research by our team of expert product reviewers. The picks are based on examining user reviews, product specifications, and, in some limited cases, our experience with the specific products named.

Paws & Pals 3-Wheel Stroller

This easy-to-maneuver, three-wheeled stroller is lightweight, at less than 15 pounds, and can accommodate pets up to 35 pounds. The mesh zipper cover is breathable and claims to be escape-proof, while allowing for front entry facilitated by a footboard step. And the zippered back door makes for an easy way to unload your pet.

This stroller includes a leash clip to keep pets secure, even when the canopy is down, and the folds compact for easy storage with the push of a button. In addition, the stroller’s rear-wheel parking brakes will keep the stroller from rolling away. With an undercarriage for stashing additional items, this stroller is especially handy if you’re running errands or just like the option of having extra space.

Midrange in price and available in four colors, this stroller is definitely best for basic walks and flat terrain, as reviewers say it’s not heavy-duty enough for sportier ventures.

Pros

  • Affordable

  • Lightweight

  • Attractive

Cons

  • Not ideal for sporty activities or rough terrain

Gen7Pets Regal Plus Pet Stroller

A few steps up from your no-frills stroller, the Gen7Pets has front wheels with shock absorbers that swivel 360 degrees on smooth pavement and lock on rocky terrain, for a wider range of maneuverability. A mesh canopy is fitted with secure locking zippers, but can also be completely folded under the hood so it’s out of the way. An interior safety tether keeps pets contained and safe, and the base of the carriage is lined with a thick, machine-washable pad for your pet’s comfort.

Other appealing features include a 38-inch handle to enable longer strides, an undercarriage for extra storage, and places to stash a phone or drink. The stroller is easily collapsible and, at 11.5 pounds, very lightweight. But it can only accommodate pets up to 25 pounds, so it wouldn’t be the right fit for those with larger animals.

Pros

  • Good on rough terrain

  • Comfortable to use

Cons

  • Only accommodates smaller pets

BestPet 4 Wheel Pet Stroller

This four-wheeled stroller is a great budget-friendly option, safely transporting pets up to 30 pounds. It has a shorter, wider build, allowing animals to lie down and relax instead of needing to sit up the whole ride. A durable mesh covers three sides of the stroller—in addition to a folding waterproof canopy—for improved airflow and visibility.

The front wheels on this stroller rotate 360 degrees, allowing for smooth turns without dead ends—perfect for maneuvering around small spaces. And, speaking of small spaces, it’s a breeze to collapse and store. At just over 10 pounds, this stroller is also lightweight. There’s no undercarriage for extra storage, but it has a cup holder.

Pros

  • Affordable

  • Roomy

Cons

  • No extra storage space

Product image of Vivo Three Wheel Pet Stroller
Vivo Three Wheel Pet Stroller

The three-wheeled Vivo is similar to other models in that it includes a trio of zippered access points for getting your pet in and out of the stroller. A top mesh window along the canopy lets you peek in at them on your outings, and mesh on the front provides ventilation and visibility for your pet. (However, there’s no mesh around the sides.)

A padded foam bottom provides comfort for your animal, while the undercarriage for stashing extra items is something you’ll appreciate. There are even dual cup holders and a center tray. The Vivo is easy to store, too, collapsing with just the push of a button. It can safely carry up to 30 pounds.

Pros

  • Multiple storage areas

  • Top window for viewing

Cons

  • Restricted viewing

  • Lower weight capacity

HPZ Pet Rover XL

If you’re looking for a double pet stroller, or one with a higher weight capacity for large pets, the HPZ Pet Rover XL is your best bet. This is the Cadillac of pet strollers, expandable by up to 35 inches lengthwise and accommodating one or more pets up to a whopping 75 pounds.

Needless to say, it’s well supported—with a rigid, rust-free aluminum frame, weather-resistant fabric, and automotive-grade rubber tires. Plus, it’s covered by a three-year replacement guarantee.

The stroller has a large, zippered rear entryway, but features an otherwise zip-free design, instead making use of quick-release latches and locks. Three-stop canopy levels allow a range of visibility for pets, and you’ll appreciate features like the reversible handlebar, three accessory pockets, bottle holder, and the large undercarriage for storage.

Pros

  • Supports a combined weight of up to 75 lbs

  • Expandable

Cons

  • None that we could find

How to choose a pet stroller

Pet strollers are often better alternatives to pet carriers, and are similar to baby strollers in that you’ll want the stroller to be safe for transporting your pet from place to place. You’ll also want to find a stroller that can hold up over rugged roads or cracked sidewalks, with a weight limit that’s suitable for your dog, cat, or other companion.

Treating your pet to an outing in the fresh air shouldn’t be a chore. But with the right pet stroller, it’ll be a breeze.

Safety features

Like any vehicle that transports a cared-for family member, safety is key. Whether you’re worried about an escape-artist kitten, pets that overheat easily, or just want to cover all the bases, keeping safety features high on your list will save you from buyer’s remorse.

Not all pet strollers are built the same, and with specially designed zippers and locks, you can venture out into the world without having to worry about their possible escape attempts. Still, not all of the different combos will work for you. If you have dexterity issues, some options can be more difficult to manage than others. In these cases, we find a leash clip especially helpful, and the added security feature is a good idea for any pet.

Most strollers strive to create as much airflow as possible, with the option to keep your pet shaded or give them some sun at the same time. If your pet is prone to overheating, you may want to consider a pet stroller with all-around mesh and a built-in canopy so they can still enjoy a breeze—whether they’re in the sun or not.

Like children’s strollers, pet strollers also offer parking brakes to ensure you won’t have the cartoon-nightmare experience of chasing after your pet if the stroller rolls away on an incline.

Quality

Choosing pet gear can certainly be overwhelming. But when it comes to members of our family, furry or otherwise, quality is of high importance. Finding a high-quality pet stroller with a smooth ride and ease of use is important; you want your pet to enjoy themselves and stay comfortable on all types of terrain. A bumpy ride can increase stress levels in an already anxious pet.

If you’re planning on spending more time outdoors or on uneven surfaces, then a stroller with air-filled tires would be a great choice. The added cushion provides a smoother ride for pets when going over rough terrain and makes it easier to maneuver over rocks. For indoor use or flat sidewalks, you don’t have to take this into consideration. A stroller with smaller wheels will work just fine.

For some pet strollers, bedding is as much a feature of quality as it is comfort. After all, your pet’s overall comfort will ultimately be the tell of whether or not they allow you to take them out into the world.

Weight capacity

Pet strollers aren’t just for small pets and sometimes our big buddies need an extra hand in getting from point A to point B. If your pet’s on the larger side, you’ll want to pay close attention to the capacity of the stroller you’re considering. While some are meant to transport multiple pets or heavier animals, others can carry just one pet at a time and may not be built to suit big dogs’ needs.

Fortunately, there are some great pet strollers for large dogs and heavier pets. For strollers with higher weight limits, you’ll want to consider how easy the stroller you pick is to fold down and store. A compact, lightweight pet stroller could be great for a small dog or cat, but a heavier stroller with a higher weight limit might be tricky to store.
