An electric bike (sometimes called an e-bike) is one of the most convenient modes of transportation available today. Not a standard bicycle, but not quite a motorcycle, these swift commuter bikes might just be the way of the future. They utilize both pedal power and a rechargeable electric, powerful motor to offer the best of both worlds. Some e-bikes even have a range of well over fifty miles on a single charge—quite an impressive battery life.

Not only does an electric bike give you a far greater range than a standard bicycle; it also offers the convenience of a perspiration-free city commute and arrival at work, or wherever you might be headed. Some e-bikes are lightweight and can even fold up to fit in the corner of a room. Others offer sturdy, smooth rides that allow you to zip through heavy brush, sand, or snow like a beast. Not to mention they’re 100% free of emissions, so they’re great for the environment.

If you’re not quite sure what type of electric bike is best for you, then read on. After looking through different electric bike reviews and bike features within different price ranges, we found these to be the best five electric bikes you can get to ride all the best bike paths in your area.

Lectric XP 3.0

Our testers loved this folding e-bike for its excellent build quality, easy assembly, and raw power. The ignition placement—underneath the frame—is a little awkward, but you’ll be overall pleased with the bike’s battery life, comfort level, hydraulic disc brakes, and power. The standard-model battery runs for about 25 miles of powered travel, but there’s a longer-range version available as well.

It’s got a seven-gear-set speed of 20 mph. Our chief scientist found that it managed about 18 mph even on steep hills. There are two latches, one for the handlebars and one for the frame, that lock in place for folding and unfolding. Of the folding e-bikes we’ve tested, this one was by far the most compact in transit.

Pros

  • Easy to assemble

  • Excellent quality

  • Impressive motor and battery

Cons

  • Awkward key placement
